What is BOTOX® Cosmetic?
BOTOX® Cosmetic
is a purified protein produced by the Clostridium
botulinum bacterium.
BOTOX® acts as
a neurotoxin, temporarily reducing the activity of
muscles that cause overlying skin to contract and
over time, form wrinkles. As the muscle relaxes, the
wrinkles are smoothed away. Your face will still be
capable of expression and you will still look like
you - just smoother!
How does BOTOX® work?
The procerus and
corrugator muscles are the dynamic muscles located
between the eye brows which allow us to frown. The
more frequently these muscles are used, the more
likely that a furrow or frown line will form.
BOTOX®
Cosmetic works by reducing the activity in these
muscles to give you a more relaxed and carefree
appearance. Quite often these lines can be
completely erased with regular use of
BOTOX®.
Best of all, treatment with
BOTOX®
is simple and can be completed in as little as 10
minutes. There is no recovery time, and you can get
back to your day with little interruption.
What can I expect at my BOTOX® Cosmetic treatment?
When you first arrive
at the clinic you will meet with Dr. Curry. He will
take the time to explain the treatment to you and
answer all of your questions. Dr. Curry will then
examine your wrinkles in relation to your muscle
movement and let you know how much product you will
need in order to achieve the best, most natural
result. Next, several tiny injections of a very
small amount of
BOTOX®
mixed with saline will be injected into these
predetermined areas. Because the needle used to
administer
BOTOX®
is so fine in gauge, most people do not feel any
discomfort during the procedure. If you anticipate
feeling sensitive, the treatment area can first be
numbed with an ice pack or a topical anesthetic.
What facial areas can be treated with BOTOX®?
-
Between the brows
(deeper furrows and frown lines)
-
Forehead
(horizontal expression lines)
-
Eye area (crows
feet and squint lines)
-
Brow area to give
a natural, lifted look
How long do the effects of BOTOX® last?
The effects of
BOTOX®
are temporary, lasting approximately 4 months.
BOTOX®
can be repeated at approximate 4 month intervals in
order to maintain continuity of cosmetic effect.
BOTOX®
is also used to control
Hyperhidrosis
(excessive sweating) and is FDA approved for the
treatment of the underarm area.
