Five Alternative Benefits of Botox

Posted in Beauti-Med Makeovers

Botulinum toxin, or Botox, is best known for its properties as a treatment to help eliminate wrinkles and fine lines. However, that’s not where the benefits of Botox end!

Botox Injections

In fact, this cosmetic procedure has numerous other medical uses that most people don’t know about. Here are just a few of the alternative uses of Botox:

1. Controlling Muscle spasms and pain

Many neurological conditions, like multiple sclerosis for instance, result in painful muscle spasticity. Botox injections are sometimes used to remedy this problem, since they can stop muscles from contracting and twitching.

2. Excessive Sweating

Perspiration is natural, but for the thousands of people affected by hyperhidrosis, excessive sweating can have a very negative effect on day to day life. Botox is often used to treat hyperhidrosis by interrupting the brain’s signals to the sweat glands.

This procedure lasts 6 to 8 months and can be used for sweat glands in the armpits, hands, feet, and even the face.

3. Migraines

Although it’s not listed as one of Botox’s treatments on their official website, doctors have found that Botulinum toxin is an effective treatment for chronic migraines and is widely used in parts of the UK to help adults manage their headaches. Although it’s less common than some other treatments, it’s frequently used when other medications are not effective, or have caused too many side effects in the patient.

4. Bell’s Palsy

Bell’s palsy occurs when nerve problems cause the drooping of a person’s face on one side. This drooping is usually only temporary and lasts a few months, but some people are affected by it long-term. In these cases, Botox injections are often used to help relax tight muscles and minimize muscle twitching or other unwanted movements.

5. Strabismus

More commonly referred to simply as crossed eyes or a squint, strabismus occurs when the eyes are unable to align to look at a single object. Botox is often used to inject one of the eye muscles, which temporarily weakens it and allows the eyes to realign properly.
